In a measuring cup, mix together 1 cup of water and 1/4 cup of whole milk. Microwave for about 40 seconds until it reaches approximately 110 degrees.
Add 2 and 1/4 teaspoons of yeast and 1 teaspoon of sugar to the milk mixture. Stir until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine 3 and 1/4 cups of bread flour and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and mix using a wooden spoon.
Add 1/4 cup of softened butter to the dough.
Mix until the dough comes together. Then, knead the dough by hand for 8 minutes.
Grease a bowl with oil, place the dough inside, and flip it to coat all sides with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let it proof in a warm place (like an oven turned off) for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Once the dough has doubled, sprinkle some flour on a surface, and gently turn out the dough.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle, and then roll it up tightly, tucking in the sides as you go.
Grease a loaf pan and place the rolled dough inside. Cover with plastic wrap again, and let proof for an additional 30 minutes.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes.
