How do I halve a recipe?
Paste the ingredient list above and set the multiplier to 0.5, or set the new serving count to half the original. Every quantity gets divided and written back as a fraction you can measure, so 3/4 cup becomes 3/8 cup. Where no usable fraction is close, you get the decimal instead and can convert it to spoons.
Does it handle fractions like 1 1/2 or ½?
Yes. Whole numbers, decimals, ASCII fractions (1 1/2), unicode fractions (1½) and ranges (2-3 tablespoons) are all read correctly, and the result comes back in the same human form.
What about eggs, or 'salt to taste'?
Quantities are scaled arithmetically, so half of 3 eggs is 1 1/2 eggs and the cooking judgement is still yours. Lines with no leading quantity come through untouched, and the tool tells you how many it left alone, so nothing disappears from your list without you knowing.
Should I scale cooking times too?
No, times do not scale linearly. Doubling a cake does not double its bake time. Use a bigger tin or two tins and start checking at the original time. Doubling a stew mostly changes how long it takes to come up to temperature, not how long it simmers.
