Directions

  1. 1Add 4 to 4.5 cups of bread flour to a large bowl.
  2. 2Add 2 and 1/4 teaspoons (or one packet) of fast-rising yeast to the flour.
  3. 3Add 2 tablespoons of light brown sugar.
  4. 4Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt.
  5. 5Whisk all dry ingredients together to ensure they are spread throughout the flour.
  6. 6Add 1/4 cup of oil to the dry mixture.
  7. 7Add 1 and 1/2 cups of warm water to the mixture.
  8. 8Stir the ingredients in the bowl until it forms a shaggy dough.
  9. 9Turn the dough out onto a clean surface.
  10. 10Gather all the dough together and knead in all the dry flour.
  11. 11Once the dough is kneaded, spray a clean bowl with oil.
  12. 12Place the kneaded dough into the oiled bowl.
  13. 13Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise until it doubles in size, which should take about an hour.
  14. 14Once the dough has proofed, turn it out onto a clean surface (do not punch it down).
  15. 15Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  16. 16Take a pizza cutter and cut a side off of the dough.
  17. 17Roll out the piece of dough into a long rope.
  18. 18Form the pretzel shape by setting the middle down, crossing the ends, crossing them again, and sticking the ends down.
  19. 19Get a shallow dish and pour some water in it.
  20. 20Sprinkle in about 1/4 cup of baking soda into the water.
  21. 21Have a parchment-lined baking sheet ready.
  22. 22Dip both sides of each pretzel into the baking soda water.
  23. 23Place the dipped pretzels onto the parchment-lined baking sheet.
  24. 24Brush all your pretzels with an egg wash.
  25. 25Sprinkle the pretzels with pretzel sea salt or coarse sea salt.
  26. 26Place the pretzels into the 450-degree oven for 10 minutes.
  27. 27Brush the baked pretzel with melted butter.
  28. 28Taste the pretzel to enjoy your homemade Auntie Anne's pretzels.

Tips

  • Do not add more liquid when kneading the dough.
  • Do not punch down the dough after proofing to ensure a fluffy, airy pretzel.
  • You can use coarse sea salt from the Dollar Tree instead of expensive pretzel sea salt.
  • Brush with melted butter for enhanced flavor, just like Auntie Anne's.
  • Make the pretzels however you want, it doesn't matter how they look as long as they taste good and they are easy for you to eat.
  • You can eat this with a cheese dip or just plain, whatever you like.
