Directions

  1. 1Melt isomalt nibs in a bowl to create geode crystals.
  2. 2Place a sheet of parchment paper in a 6 inch round cake pan.
  3. 3Pour melted isomalt into the pan and spread evenly.
  4. 4Let isomalt cool down then peel it away from the parchment paper.
  5. 5Use a torch to remove fogginess and any imperfections.
  6. 6CAREFULLY break the isomalt to create shards.
  7. 7Break rock candy into smaller pieces.
  8. 8Prepare a cake and carve it into a half sphere shape.
  9. 9Cover the cake with green buttercream and chill.
  10. 10Mix food safe molding putty and create molds using rocks.
  11. 11Roll out gray modeling chocolate and press it into the molds.
  12. 12Peel the molds off the rocks and place them on the cake.
  13. 13Carve out the center of the cake, creating a hollow interior.
  14. 14Cover the top with modeling chocolate, trim and blend.
  15. 15Paint the inside of the geode with purple food coloring.
  16. 16Add the rock candy pieces to the geode, painted side down.
  17. 17Add some sharp isomalt shards along the edges.
  18. 18Fill the space between the dark gray modeling chocolate and the rock candy with light gray modeling chocolate.
  19. 19Paint the outside of the cake with different shades of food coloring for a realistic effect.
