Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a bowl, combine 1 cup of boiling water, 4 ounces of chopped pitted dates, and 0.5 teaspoon of baking soda. Stir and set aside.

In a separate bowl, cream together 0.5 stick of butter and 1 cup of powdered sugar.

Add 1 beaten egg to the butter and sugar mixture.

In another bowl, mix 0.5 teaspoon of baking soda with 1.5 cups of flour.

Fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

Add the chopped dates (which have absorbed water) to the batter and mix.

Pour the batter into an 8x8 greased baking dish (double the recipe for a 9x13 dish).

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes.

While the cake is baking, prepare the sauce by mixing 1 stick of butter, 1.25 cups of brown sugar, and 1 cup of heavy cream.

Once the cake has cooled slightly, poke holes in it.

Pour half of the prepared sauce over the cake.

Tips
