Lahore Special Ghota Daal

Directions

  1. 1Soak 2 cups of chana dal for 3-4 hours.
  2. 2Add the soaked dal, chicken, salt, and turmeric to the Instant Pot and cook for 20 minutes.
  3. 3Finely chop one onion.
  4. 4Heat oil in a steel pan and sauté the chopped onion until golden.
  5. 5Chop tomatoes and set aside for later use.
  6. 6Once the Instant Pot pressure is released, remove the chicken and shred it using a chicken shredder.
  7. 7Add ginger garlic paste to the golden onions.
  8. 8Add the shredded chicken and green chilies to the pan.
  9. 9Add salt, red chili powder, coriander powder, and turmeric to the chicken and fry well.
  10. 10Add the chopped tomatoes to the chicken mixture and fry.
  11. 11Add some water to prevent sticking and continue frying.
  12. 12Blend the cooked dal using a hand blender or a regular blender until smooth.
  13. 13Combine the blended dal with the chicken mixture in a deep pot.
  14. 14Use a madhani (wooden hand blender) to "ghota" (mash and mix) the dal and chicken until the chicken shreds separate.
  15. 15Prepare a tempering by frying green chilies and cumin in oil, then pour it over the dal.

Tips

  • Add tomatoes a little later than other spices for faster cooking.
  • If food sticks to stainless steel, add a little water to move it around.
  • You can use this shredder for any meat when making shami kabab or haleem.
