Christmas Morning Casserole

Directions

  1. 1Cook a pound of your favorite breakfast sausage in a cast iron skillet.
  2. 2Cook 8 to 10 pieces of bacon in the same skillet.
  3. 3Once cooked, place the sausage and bacon on a paper towel-lined plate and set aside.
  4. 4Take half a loaf of country white bread.
  5. 5Spread butter on top of the bread slices.
  6. 6Cut the buttered bread into half-inch cubes.
  7. 7Place the bread cubes in a bowl and set aside.
  8. 8In a mixing bowl, crack 8 whole eggs.
  9. 9Add 2 and 2/3 cups of whole milk to the eggs.
  10. 10Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt.
  11. 11Add 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of dry mustard.
  12. 12Add 1 teaspoon of dry parsley.
  13. 13Add a quarter teaspoon of paprika.
  14. 14Add a quarter teaspoon of pepper.
  15. 15Whisk the egg mixture until perfectly combined.
  16. 16Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  17. 17Add the bread cubes to the bottom of the baking dish.
  18. 18Top the bread cubes with the cooked sausage crumbles.
  19. 19Crumble the cooked bacon on top of the sausage.
  20. 20Add almost all of the 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.
  21. 21Pour the egg mixture over the ingredients in the baking dish.
  22. 22Use a wooden spoon to ensure all bread cubes are soaked in the egg mixture.
  23. 23Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese on top.
  24. 24Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  25. 25Refrigerate the covered casserole overnight.
  26. 26On Christmas morning, remove the foil.
  27. 27Bake the casserole in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 to 45 minutes.
  28. 28Remove the casserole from the oven when it's golden and bubbly.
  29. 29Top with sour cream, hot sauce, or pocket parsley as desired.
  30. 30Cut a piece of the casserole, place it on a plate, and serve.
