Easy Guyanese Oil Roti

Directions

  1. 1In a large bowl add sifted flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. 2Go in with some warm water.
  3. 3Pour it in a little bit at a time just so it doesn't get too sticky and form it into a dough ball.
  4. 4Divide the dough into eight even pieces or however many pieces that you like.
  5. 5Form it into smaller balls just so you know that it's the same size throughout.
  6. 6On a floured surface, take a piece and start rolling it out.
  7. 7Apply olive oil.
  8. 8Split the top and start rolling the sides into a cone.
  9. 9Poke both sides of the opening.
  10. 10Spread some olive oil on top and press it down a bit.
  11. 11Cover with a damp paper towel, a kitchen towel, and let it sit for 25 to 30 minutes.
  12. 12Lay one of the dough balls on a floured surface and start rolling it out.
  13. 13Cook the roti on medium heat for about 60 seconds per side while also brushing it with olive oil.
  14. 14Clap it while it's hot and release all those delicious layers.

  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1.5 cups warm water

Tips

  • Pour water a little bit at a time just so it doesn't get too sticky.
  • The dough does not need to be perfectly round, you just need to roll it out enough to apply olive oil.
