Slice the onion and separate the slices into rings.

Place onion rings in a bowl of ice cold water for a while.

Remove the rings and place them individually on a towel.

Peel off the inner lining of the onion rings.

Dry each ring individually with a paper towel.

In a bowl, whisk one egg, add flour, salt, sugar, and melted butter or shortening and whisk together.

Gradually add milk and whisk until smooth.

Heat up the deep fryer oil.

Dip the onion rings in the batter and let the excess drip off.

Carefully place the battered onion rings in the hot oil, and fry until golden brown.

Remove onion rings from the oil and put in a colander.

Transfer to a plate and sprinkle some salt.
