Directions

  1. 1Warm the milk and whisk it with 1 tablespoon of sugar and the yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it looks foamy on top. Ensure milk is 110°F.
  2. 2Add the remaining sugar, egg, softened butter, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Mix with a stand mixer using the paddle attachment, then add the rest of the flour and mix until combined.
  3. 3Switch to a dough hook and knead for 5-8 minutes. The dough should be soft, slightly sticky, but still easy to handle. It's ready when it bounces back after being poked.
  4. 4Add a little oil to a bowl, place the dough in it, and turn to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1.5-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. 5Punch down the dough, divide into 14-16 pieces, and shape each piece into a smooth ball.
  6. 6Arrange in a baking dish, cover, and let them get puffy for about 1 hour.
  7. 7Brush with egg wash and bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes, until golden on top.
  8. 8While they’re warm, brush with honey butter and enjoy.

Tips

  • Make sure milk is 110°F, higher than that will kill the yeast.
  • If dough is too sticky, add 1 tbsp flour, but be careful not to add too much.
  • Dough is ready when it bounces back after being poked.
  • Let dough rise in a warm place, like a microwave.
