Directions

  1. 1Prepare the buttermilk substitute: Mix the vinegar with the milk and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  2. 2Mix the wet ingredients: In a bowl, beat the eggs with the sugar and vanilla extract using an electric mixer for 1 minute. Add the milk and oil (or melted butter) and mix for another 30 seconds.
  3. 3Combine the dry ingredients: Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and fold gently using a hand whisk until fully combined.
  4. 4Prepare the streusel topping: Mix all the streusel ingredients (walnuts, flour, melted butter, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon) in a bowl until well combined.
  5. 5Assemble the cake: Pour half of the cake batter into a prepared baking pan. Evenly distribute half of the apple pieces and half of the streusel topping over the batter. Pour the remaining batter on top, followed by the rest of the apples and streusel topping.
  6. 6Bake: Preheat the oven. Bake for 50 minutes in total: First 40 minutes at 180°C (350°F). Last 10 minutes at 170°C (338°F).
  7. 7Cool and serve: Once baked, let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then remove it from the pan and place it on a cooling rack. Allow it to cool completely before slicing. Optionally, drizzle with caramel sauce before serving.
