Directions
1
Add 1 and a half teaspoons of active dry yeast and one teaspoon of sugar to half a cup of warm water.
2
Mix the yeast, sugar, and water together and let it sit until it foams, for about 10 minutes.
3
Combine a quarter cup of milk, a quarter cup of water, and two tablespoons of flour in a pan.
4
Whisk the mixture on low heat until it forms a paste (Tangzhong).
5
For the dry ingredients, add two and a quarter cups of flour, one tablespoon of sugar, and one teaspoon of salt to a bowl.
6
Mix the dry ingredients together.
7
Add one whole egg, the yeast mixture, the Tangzhong, and two tablespoons of softened unsalted butter to the dry ingredients.
8
Let all the ingredients combine together on a medium speed in the stand mixer.
9
Use a spoon to get some of the dry ingredients to come down into the mixture.
10
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it looks smooth and elastic.
11
Flour a clean surface and knead the dough a little bit by hand.
12
Add some oil to a bowl, place the dough in the bowl, and cover it with foil.
13
Let the dough rise until it doubles in size (approximately 2 hours, depending on room temperature).
14
Cut the risen dough into nine equal sections.
15
Roll each section into a ball.
16
Add the nine dough balls to an oiled baking dish.
17
Cover and let the dough balls rise again until they are nice and puffed up.
18
Brush the risen dough balls with egg wash.
19
Put them in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius) for about 20 minutes.
20
Drizzle and brush the baked rolls with honey butter.
