Directions

  1. 1Cut a large sweet onion into 1/2-inch thick slices, remove the papery skin, and separate the layers into rings.
  2. 2In the first bowl, combine 1/2 cup of flour, 1 teaspoon of paprika, and 1 teaspoon of salt, then mix.
  3. 3In the second bowl, whisk two large eggs and add 2/3 cup of buttermilk, mixing until combined.
  4. 4In the third bowl, add about two cups of Panko breadcrumbs and two tablespoons of olive oil, then mix with your hands until combined.
  5. 5Dredge each onion ring by first dipping it into the flour mixture, then the buttermilk mixture, then back into the flour mixture, shaking off excess each time.
  6. 6Dip the onion ring back into the buttermilk mixture, then into the Panko mixture, pressing it down to cover thoroughly.
  7. 7Place the breaded onion ring onto a baking sheet and repeat the dredging process for all desired rings.
  8. 8Set your air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) and 12 minutes.
  9. 9Spray the air fryer basket and carefully transfer the onion rings into it, doing an optional spritz on top for extra crunch.
  10. 10Air fry for 12 minutes, flipping the onion rings over at the six-minute mark and optionally spraying with more oil for extra golden results.
  11. 11Once done, serve immediately and enjoy with a dip if desired.

Tips

  • Use any spices you enjoy in the flour mixture, such as onion powder, garlic powder, or chili powder.
  • Drizzle olive oil into the Panko breadcrumbs and mix with hands to help them become golden and delicious.
  • When dredging, expect your hands to get battered; it's worth it.
  • For extra crunchy and golden onion rings, spritz with oil before air frying and when flipping.
  • If you air fry frequently, consider having two air fryers for quicker cooking.
