Chow Chow Milagu Kootu Recipe-Chayote Squash Cooked in Peppery Lentil Curry

Directions

  1. 1Wash and peel the outer skin of the chayote quash with a peeler.
  2. 2Cut the chayote squash into cubes and keep aside.
  3. 3Wash and soak the moong dal in water for 10 minutes.
  4. 4In a small pan, dry roast the peppercorns, cumin seeds, urad dal and grated coconut till they turn golden and fragrant in medium heat.
  5. 5Grind the roasted ingredients to a coarse mix using a mixer grinder and keep aside.
  6. 6Heat oil in a pressure cooker.
  7. 7Add the mustard seeds to the hot oil and let it crackle.
  8. 8Once the mustard seeds have crackled add the asafoetida, curry leaves, red chillies and let it splutter.
  9. 9Add the chayote squash and saute for a minute.
  10. 10Drain and add the moong dal, and saute for a minute.
  11. 11Add the ground pepper mix, turmeric powder, salt to taste, 1.5 cup of water and mix well.
  12. 12Put the lid on and pressure cook for 2 whistles on medium heat.
  13. 13Once the pressure is completely released, remove the lid, mix well and its ready to serve.
  14. 14Serve the Chow Chow Milagu Kootu Recipe along with Phulkas or with Jeera Rasam, Steamed Rice and Elai Vadam for the weeknight dinner.

  • 3 Chow chow (chayote squash) cut into cubes
  • 1.5 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu)
  • 1.5 sprig Curry leaves
  • 3 Dry Red Chillies
  • 0.75 cup Yellow Moong Dal (Split)
  • pinch Asafoetida (hing)
  • 0.75 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1.5 teaspoon Whole Black Peppercorns
  • 1.5 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 3 teaspoons White Urad Dal (Split)
  • 1.5 tablespoon Fresh coconut grated
  • 3 teaspoons Oil
  • Salt to taste
