Add butter to the baking dish and melt it in the oven.
Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the melted butter in the bottom of the dish.
Open two cans of pineapple slices and drain the juice into a measuring cup, reserving the juice for later.
Arrange a single layer of pineapple slices over the brown sugar in the dish.
Place one maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple ring.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, oil, 1 cup of pineapple juice, French vanilla pudding mix, and eggs. Mix until well combined and smooth.
Add 1/3 cup of crushed pineapple to the cake batter and mix.
Pour the cake batter over the fruit in the baking dish and spread it out completely and evenly.
Bake the cake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 minutes, or until the center is cooked through.
Once baked, allow the cake to cool in the dish, upside down, for about 20 minutes.
Flip the cake onto a flat pan or serving platter once completely cooled.
