Pour the custard mixture into a three-quart saucepan and heat over medium heat while stirring constantly until thickened.

Stir in the butter and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract once the custard thickens, then remove from heat to cool.

Layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and the prepared custard in a baking dish, repeating the process for three layers total.

Beat egg whites with a hand mixer until frothy, then add cream of tartar and continue beating.

Add 1 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, beating until soft peaks form.

Spread the meringue evenly over the custard and place under the broiler.
