Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Southern Banana Pudding

Directions

  1. 1Whisk egg yolks, 1 cup sugar, heavy cream, flour, kosher salt, and whole milk in a large bowl.
  2. 2Pour the custard mixture into a three-quart saucepan and heat over medium heat while stirring constantly until thickened.
  3. 3Stir in the butter and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract once the custard thickens, then remove from heat to cool.
  4. 4Layer vanilla wafers, sliced bananas, and the prepared custard in a baking dish, repeating the process for three layers total.
  5. 5Beat egg whites with a hand mixer until frothy, then add cream of tartar and continue beating.
  6. 6Add 1 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, beating until soft peaks form.
  7. 7Spread the meringue evenly over the custard and place under the broiler.
