Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.

Thinly slice potatoes.

Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.

In a saucepan, heat cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from heat.

Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes.

Sprinkle with half the Gruyère or cheddar cheese.

Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and cheese.

Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove foil, sprinkle Parmesan cheese, and bake uncovered for another 15-20 minutes until golden.

Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

0.5 cup Parmesan cheese
