1Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
2In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until combined. Mix in the egg and maple syrup.
3Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
4Cover and chill the dough for at least 3 hours, or ideally overnight.
5Let the dough sit out briefly to soften just enough to work with. Divide into portions and roll into balls, handling the dough as little as possible.
6Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–13 minutes, or until the edges are set. Allow the cookies to cool.
7For the icing, melt the butter and maple syrup together in a saucepan. Remove from the heat, then whisk in the sifted confectioners’ sugar and a pinch of salt until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled cookies.
Ingredients
2 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 large egg, room temperature
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2 tbsp unsalted butter (optional)
1/3 cup pure maple syrup (optional)
1 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted (optional)
1 pinch salt (optional)
Tips
Don’t skip chilling the dough! It makes it much easier to handle.
Work quickly when rolling your cookies, as the dough becomes sticky as it warms up.
The maple icing is optional, but adds an extra touch of sweetness and maple flavour!
