Instant Pot French Onion Salisbury Steaks

Directions

  1. 1Add ground beef, 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, panko, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, kosher salt and pepper to a mixing bowl.
  2. 2Use clean hands to combine well.
  3. 3Divide equally into 4 balls.
  4. 4Flatten into patties and set aside.
  5. 5Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting.
  6. 6Add in the butter and let it melt.
  7. 7Add in the sliced onions and baking soda.
  8. 8Toss well.
  9. 9When onions start to yellow and put off a little moisture pour in the water, bouillon and 1 Tbsp Worcestershire.
  10. 10Turn off Instant Pot.
  11. 11Add the patties on top of the onions.
  12. 12Cover Instant Pot and secure the lid.
  13. 13Make sure valve is set to sealing.
  14. 14Set the manual/pressure cook button to 1 minute.
  15. 15When time is up let pot sit for 10 minutes and then move valve to venting.
  16. 16Remove the lid and move patties to a plate.
  17. 17Make a cornstarch slurry by stirring together cornstarch and water until smooth.
  18. 18Turn Instant Pot to sauté setting.
  19. 19Stir in the slurry until gravy thickens.
  20. 20Salt and pepper the gravy to taste.
  21. 21Place patties back into the pot and top each patty with a slice of cheese.
  22. 22Turn Instant Pot to the keep warm setting.
  23. 23Place the lid of top and let the cheese melt for a couple minutes.
  24. 24Serve the patties on top of mashed potatoes or egg noodles and top with gravy.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (85/15 works well)
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.25 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 1.5 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • 4 medium yellow onions, halved and sliced
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp Better than Bouillon Beef Base
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2-3 Tbsp cornstarch

Tips

  • You can use another type of cheese like swiss, gruyere, parmesan, mozzarella, etc.
  • This recipe makes a lot of gravy and you could easily halve the amount of gravy. Or you can double (or 1.5 times) the patty ingredients.
  • Serve the patties and gravy over homemade mashed potatoes or egg noodles. Other choices are cauliflower rice, rice, buttered toast, etc.
  • If you don’t have Better than Bouillon you can use another type of beef base or bouillon cube.
  • I used my 6 quart Instant Pot but you can also make this in an 8 quart pot.
