Directions
1
Heat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a loaf pan or small baking dish.
2
In a large bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until evenly combined.
3
Pour in milk and oil (or melted butter) and stir just until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix — this keeps the bread tender.
4
Transfer dough to the prepared pan, smooth the top, and bake 18–22 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
5
Let cool 5–10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with butter, honey, or jam.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1.25 cups milk (or water)
2 tablespoons oil or melted butter
Equipment
large bowl
loaf pan or small baking dish
whisk
Tips
For extra softness, use whole milk instead of water.
Brush the top with melted butter right after baking for a bakery-style finish.
Add herbs, shredded cheese, or garlic powder for a savory twist.
If the top browns too quickly, loosely cover with foil during the last few minutes.
