Directions

  1. 1In a pressure cooker, add the toor dal along with chopped onions, tomato, garlic, green chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida.
  2. 2Add water level above the ingredients and mix everything.
  3. 3Pressure cook in a medium flame for five whistles.
  4. 4Meanwhile, in a bowl, add in the sambar powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder along with a little water and make it to a fine slurry.
  5. 5Once the pressure is released in the pressure cooker, open and mash well.
  6. 6Now, add in the spice powder slurry and mix well.
  7. 7Also add in the needed water and tamarind water along with the required salt.
  8. 8Put the pressure cooker back into the stove and bring it to a boil and cook for 15 minutes.
  9. 9Finally, garnish with some coriander leaves and switch off.
  10. 10Meanwhile, prepare the tadka by adding mustard, cumin, asafoetida, dry red chilli, curry leaves and some small onion to a pan.
  11. 11Add the prepared tadka to the sambar.

  • 3 tbsp sambar powder
  • 0.5 tsp red chilli powder
  • 0.5 tsp cumin powder
  • 0.25 tsp turmeric powder
  • water
  • tamarind water or paste
  • salt
  • coriander leaves
  • mustard
  • cumin
  • dry red chilli
  • small onion (finely chopped shallots)
