French Onion Soup

Directions

  1. 1Cut up four big white onions, slicing them super thin.
  2. 2Melt one stick of salted butter and four tablespoons of olive oil in a pot.
  3. 3Saute the thinly sliced onions in the butter and olive oil until tender.
  4. 4Mince three garlic cloves.
  5. 5Add the minced garlic to the tender onions and cook for about 30 seconds.
  6. 6Pour in five cups of beef broth from a carton.
  7. 7Add two more cups of beef broth to the pot.
  8. 8Stir the soup mixture.
  9. 9Add one teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce.
  10. 10Add two teaspoons of dried thyme leaves.
  11. 11Add a pinch of black pepper.
  12. 12Let the soup simmer for 30 minutes.
  13. 13While the soup simmers, cut the French bread into small cubes for croutons.
  14. 14Prepare your chosen cheeses (smoked gouda, Grier, sliced mozzarella, Parmesan, white cheddar) by grating or slicing them.
  15. 15Once the soup has simmered, ladle it into oven-safe bowls.
  16. 16Add the French bread croutons on top of the soup.
  17. 17Place your desired cheese on top of the bread and soup.
  18. 18Place the bowls under the oven broiler until the cheese melts and gets bubbly over the bread.

Tips

  • Use boxed beef broth instead of canned as canned ones are too salty.
  • Cut onions super thin.
  • If using unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to taste.
