In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup warm water, 1/2 cup warm whole milk, 1 tablespoon yeast, and 2 tablespoons honey. Mix and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Add 1/4 cup more bread flour and continue mixing until the dough is manageable.
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead for 5-8 minutes, adding enough of the remaining 1 cup of bread flour until the dough is smooth and holds its shape.
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
Turn the risen dough onto a floured surface and divide into four equal pieces.
Shape each piece into a sub roll by flattening into a rectangle, rolling it up tightly, tucking in the sides, and rolling again to seal.
Place the shaped rolls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover with plastic wrap and a clean kitchen towel, and let rest for 30-45 minutes.
Beat one egg with a splash of water for the egg wash. Brush the egg wash onto the rolls, then make a score down the center of each with a razor blade or sharp knife.
Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 22 minutes, or until the rolls are a nice golden color.
Remove from oven. Optionally, top with a little butter while still warm.
