Seitan Steak

Directions

  1. 1In a large mixing bowl, combine vital wheat gluten, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, chilli powder, black pepper, salt and onion powder and whisk until combined.
  2. 2In a blender, combine the cooked lentils, water, ketchup, soy sauce, 1 tbsp oil, and liquid smoke.
  3. 3Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix with a spoon until it forms a dough ball.
  4. 4Knead the dough by hand on a clean surface until smooth and elastic.
  5. 5Divide the dough into two halves and flatten them into steak shapes.
  6. 6Rub the outside of each steak with the remaining 1 tbsp of oil.
  7. 7Place the steaks in a steamer basket over a pot of water and steam for 25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 cup canned brown lentils
  • 6 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke (optional)
  • 1 tbsp steak spice

Tips

  • If you are cooking your own lentils, refer to a note on how to prepare them.
  • You can use 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika instead of liquid smoke for an authentic smoked flavor.
  • The steaks will expand while cooking, so adjust initial size accordingly.
