Amma’s Samayal | Ep. 9 – Bread Upma

Directions

  1. 1Heat ghee or oil in a pan on medium heat.
  2. 2Add jeera seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. 3Add urad dal and chana dal; sauté until lightly golden.
  4. 4Add green chillies and finely chopped onions. Sauté until the onions turn soft and translucent.
  5. 5Add the tempeh crumbles and sauté for about 5 minutes, letting them absorb the flavours.
  6. 6Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and tomato ketchup. Sauté for another 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and the tomatoes are well cooked.
  7. 7Add the bread cubes and salt. Mix gently so the bread is evenly coated without breaking.
  8. 8Finish with fresh coriander, give it a final mix, and turn off the heat.

  • 8 slices bread, cut into small cubes
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tbsp jeera (cumin seeds)
  • 1.5 tsp urad dal
  • 1.5 tsp chana dal
  • 3 green chillies, slit
  • 2 onions, chopped very finely
  • 1 packet Hello Tempayy Tempeh Crumbles (Tawa Masala flavour)
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped very finely
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
  • 3 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 handful fresh coriander, finely chopped

Tips

  • Adding tempeh crumbles provides a protein boost without changing the taste.
  • Toasting the bread pieces a bit can prevent them from getting too soggy.
