Sprinkle flour, salt and pepper over 1kg diced beef.

Sear beef in batches until browned in a large, heavy based pan.

Fry off 1 large diced white onion and 6 grated garlic cloves until softened.

Add 300g of sliced/diced mushrooms (optional).

Add 2 tbsp tomato puree and 50ml balsamic vinegar and cook until the tomato puree deepens in color.

Add the cooked beef, 300ml beef stock, 1 can of Guinness, 1-2 tsp marmite, and 2 tsp rosemary (add thyme if you like).

Bring to a boil, scrape the bottom of the pan, then simmer for an hour, stirring every 20 minutes and adding more liquid if needed.

Transfer the mixture to an oven-proof dish and let it cool.

Chop 4-6 crumpets into cubes.

Sprinkle crumpet cubes over the filling.

Brush with melted butter mixed with garlic granules and rosemary.

Bake at 180 for 10-15 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.

300 ml beef stock

4 crumpets

1 garlic granules
