Directions

  1. 1Add 1 tablespoon of salted butter to a saucepan and turn it on medium heat until melted.
  2. 2Add one can of sweetened condensed milk and two-thirds a cup of sweetened coconut flakes into the saucepan.
  3. 3Cook the mixture on medium heat for about five to seven minutes until it thickens and starts pulling away from the pan.
  4. 4Take the mixture off the heat and put it in a separate bowl, cover it, and place it in the refrigerator until it is cooled off.
  5. 5Once cooled, take about a tablespoon of the mixture, roll it between your greased hands to form a bite-sized ball, and place it onto a parchment lined pan until all of the mixture is formed into balls.
  6. 6In a separate saucepan, combine one cup of granulated sugar, half a cup of water, and one tablespoon of vinegar.
  7. 7Bring the sugar mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally, until it turns amber in color.
  8. 8Take the sugar coating off the heat and insert a toothpick into each coconut ball.
  9. 9Dip each coconut ball quickly into the amber sugar, swirl it around, and place it back onto a parchment-lined pan.
  10. 10Let the Bala Baiana cool before serving.
