Wash and drain 1/2 cup tur dal.

Add 2 garlic pods and 1/4 tsp turmeric powder to the dal.

Add 1.5 cups of water to the mixture and mix well.

Place the cooker on the stove and pressure cook for 4 whistles.

Once the pressure subsides, add rock salt to taste and mash well.

In a pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds, 1/4 tsp cumin seeds, 1/4 asafoetida, 1 sprig curry leaves and 10 shallots.

Saute for a few minutes, then add 1 green chili and saute for a few more minutes.

Add 1 chopped tomato and saute for a few seconds.

Add 4 brinjals and saute for 2 minutes.

Add 2 tbsp sambar powder and mix well.

Add 1.5 cups of water and mix well.

Cover and cook for 10 minutes.

Add 1/4 cup tamarind pulp and boil for 5 minutes.

Add cooked tur dal and mix.

Boil for 5 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.

2 tbsp Sambar powder
0.25 cup Tamarind pulp
1 handful Coriander leaves
