Directions

  1. 1Add 3 cups of quick cooking oats to a large bowl.
  2. 2Add 1 cup of coconut to the bowl.
  3. 3Add 12 tablespoons (just under 1 cup) of cocoa powder to the bowl.
  4. 4Whisk the dry ingredients together until incorporated.
  5. 5Set the bowl of dry ingredients aside.
  6. 6In a large pot, add 3/4 cup of butter.
  7. 7Add 1/4 cup of milk to the pot.
  8. 8Add 3 cups of granulated sugar to the pot.
  9. 9Place the pot on the stovetop over medium heat and bring the mixture to a rapid boil.
  10. 10Once the mixture comes to a rapid boil, set a timer for 6 minutes.
  11. 11Stir the mixture almost constantly during the 6 minutes, ensuring it doesn't boil over.
  12. 12After 6 minutes of rapid rolling boil, remove the mixture from heat.
  13. 13Let the mixture sit long enough for the bubbles to stop activating.
  14. 14Once the wet mixture has calmed down, add it to the dry mixture in the large bowl.
  15. 15Incorporate the wet and dry mixtures together, ensuring all dry ingredients are touched by the wet ingredients.
  16. 16Leave the bowl on the counter at room temperature for about half an hour, or until it cools down a little.
  17. 17Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour, or preferably 2 hours, before rolling the snowballs.
  18. 18Spread some coconut on a plate for rolling the snowballs.
  19. 19Have clean, dry hands to roll the snowballs.
  20. 20Use a tablespoon to scoop out a portion of the mixture and form it into a ball.
  21. 21Roll the formed ball in the coconut.
  22. 22For half of the snowballs, poke a maraschino cherry in the center of the mixture.
  23. 23Form the mixture around the cherry to create a snowball.
  24. 24Roll the cherry-filled snowball in coconut.
  25. 25Pack the finished snowballs away to freeze them.
