Directions

  1. 1Trim the top of the red velvet cake to make it level.
  2. 2Cut an oval shape into the center of the cake, but do not cut all the way through.
  3. 3Remove the cut-out section and then flip the cake upside down.
  4. 4Pour simple syrup over the cake.
  5. 5Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting over the cake.
  6. 6Add red food coloring to some of the cream cheese frosting and marble it into the yellow frosting on the cake.
  7. 7Flip the cake back over so the frosted side is facing down.
  8. 8Gently cut around the edges of the initial oval cut to open up the cake.
  9. 9Mix black food coloring into tan buttercream frosting.
  10. 10Apply the black buttercream to the edges of the cake, creating a jagged, root-like texture around the opening.
  11. 11Roll out thin strands of black fondant.
  12. 12Place the fondant strands across the opening of the cake to create the gate bars.
  13. 13Use an airbrush to spray red edible paint around the gate opening to simulate a glowing effect.
