Cut an oval shape into the center of the cake, but do not cut all the way through.

Remove the cut-out section and then flip the cake upside down.

Mix black food coloring into tan buttercream frosting.

Apply the black buttercream to the edges of the cake, creating a jagged, root-like texture around the opening.

Roll out thin strands of black fondant.

Place the fondant strands across the opening of the cake to create the gate bars.
