Tips

  • Cinnamon Chex is recommended, but rice or corn Chex can be used as alternatives.
  • Melt white chocolate chips in 30-second intervals in the microwave, stirring between each, to prevent burning.
  • Vegetable oil helps thin the white chocolate for smoother coating; canola or coconut oil can be substituted.
  • Apple pie spice is a blend of fall spices, but cinnamon can be used as a substitute if unavailable.
  • Use a large bowl for tossing the cereal to ensure even coating, and a rubber spatula to avoid crushing the cereal.
  • Allow the puppy chow to cool completely before storing to prevent the powdered sugar from dissolving and the cereal from becoming soggy.
  • Break apple chips into smaller pieces before adding them, especially if they are not freeze-dried and crispy.
  • Store leftover puppy chow in an airtight container or Ziploc bag at room temperature for up to one week.
