Preheat oven to 240°C (475°F).

Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.

In a bowl, mix the cream, milk, minced garlic, salt, pepper, nutmeg, thyme, and bay leaf.

In a buttered baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes, pouring the cream mixture over each layer.

Sprinkle the grated cheese on top.

Cover the dish with parchment paper and bake for about 1 hour at 240°C.

Check the cooking by piercing the potatoes with a knife; they should be tender.

Remove the parchment paper and continue baking for another 10 minutes to brown the top.
