Homemade Flour Tortillas

instagram.com
Serves 9

Directions

  1. 1Melt the butter in the microwave.
  2. 2In a bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  3. 3Add the melted butter and warm water to the dry ingredients and mix with a spoon until a dough forms.
  4. 4Knead the dough by hand in the bowl for about 2 minutes.
  5. 5Cover the dough and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  6. 6Form the dough into a log and cut into smaller pieces.
  7. 7Roll out each piece into a thin tortilla.
  8. 8Cook the tortillas in a dry pan over medium-low heat until they puff up, then flip.
  9. 9Place the cooked tortillas on a plate lined with a slightly damp paper towel.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 0.75 tsp baking powder
  • 0.33 cup butter
  • 0.5 cup warm water

Equipment

Tips

  • For the fat, butter works great, but pork fat saved from cooking bacon is also recommended.
  • If the dough sticks to your hand while kneading, add a pinch of flour.
  • Roll out the tortillas until they are just thin enough to see through.
  • For a burrito, use a larger piece of dough and roll it into a bigger shell.
  • This recipe makes a stack of 9 tortillas, but can yield 12 if made the same size.
